This is a record that comes from loss. And suffering. But it's not a cliche concept tour through the stages of grief. It's a deeper reflection on love and loss, it's a philosophical treatise on what to do when disaster strikes. Survival is an instinct, a short-term animal reaction, but to really stay alive you gotta find a compelling reason.
What happens when pain visits you unexpected while you're writing a dance record? This, this is exactly what happens.
'How To Survive An Atomb Bomb' opens with 'An Echo', a majestic track that grows from a d minor arpeggio played on bells over a background recording of rushing water and ends up as a 120bpm deep houseish jam with orchestral timpanis and a forlorn vocal.
'Elev8' adds church bells, deep basses and a greek choir to the record's palette.
'H2SAAB' and 'Aftermath' push the record to the far east, bells turn into chimes, kotos and shakuhachis, like a bad madlib trip into zen droning.
